Choose your Leeds JLD Committee for 2023
CHARITY & EDUCATION OFFICER:
SOPHIE HUDSON

I am a friendly, motivated person and I am applying for the position of Charity & Education Officer for Leeds JLD. I am a Solicitor at Weightmans LLP in the Litigation North team working from the Leeds office. When I’m not working you’ll usually find me curled up with a book or out for food with friends.

I’ve been part of the CSR Committee at Weightmans since I joined in 2019 and regularly organise fund raising events for different charities, individually and as part of smaller groups. At the beginning of this year, I was part of a team that raised over £3,000 with a silent auction and raffle. I am currently responsible for maintaining the relationship with our office charity. I arrange regular catch-ups to keep them up to date on the funds we are continuously raising and the upcoming events we have planned. I also liaise with the charity to ensure we are meeting their needs as a corporate partner and obtain information about their upcoming initiatives so the committee can plan how these can be supported by the office. Being part of the CSR Committee is something I am personally passionate about as I feel a real sense of achievement when we are hear what the money raised does for the office charity and I’m often in awe at how many people we are able to help with our contributions. I enjoy getting involved in as many charity initiatives as I can and I would love to take up this role for Leeds JLD Committee too.

Supporting junior lawyers in their career is also important to me, as I think we can all support each other and build lasting relationships whilst doing so. I’m a mentor in the Law Society Diversity Access Scheme and I am also part of a small group that organises “Weightmans Wednesday” events which are for our junior lawyers to attend for networking and include educational elements as well. As part of being Charity & Education Officer I would continue the great work the Leeds JLD Committee already do in organising educational events to assist junior lawyers in obtaining skills to progress their careers and develop plans to make the most out of the resources around us. I think it is a key stage in our careers to build a strong foundation now and that Leeds JLD can continue to support this with fun events that help us learn how to turn our ambition into success.

Dedication and focus are something I bring to every role I take on and I would bring them to the committee in the role of Charity & Education Officer. I am very enthusiastic about this opportunity and I hope you agree that I would be an asset to the committee if chosen as this year’s Charity & Education Officer!
