Choose your Leeds JLD Committee for 2025
TRAINEE/APPRENTICE REPRESENTATIVE:
ZAIB-UN-NISA KOSSER
I should be elected for the role of Apprentice/Trainee Representative Committee Member with the JLD because, I believe I can use my experience as a Level 7 Solicitor Apprentice at rradar, to support both future and current apprentices. I aim to achieve this by demonstrating how to effectively navigate the legal world whilst leveraging their hands-on experience to complement their academic learning and providing them with a well-rounded perspective on the profession.

I am passionate about promoting awareness of the solicitor apprenticeship route because, like many, I initially believed that the only path into law was through the highly competitive training contract process. This narrow view made the legal profession feel almost inaccessible and I started to lose motivation to pursue law altogether. However, discovering the solicitor apprenticeship reignited my ambition by enabling me to earn, gain practical experience and study without the significant debt of traditional routes. By promoting this pathway, I aim to inspire others who may excel in law but are unaware of such opportunities.

I can commit to attending JLD’s monthly meetings and organising events, as demonstrated by my volunteer work with a UK charity. I raised funds for homelessness in the UK and supported international communities affected by natural disasters, organising events and distributing care packages to the homeless. This experience gave me valuable insights into vulnerable communities in need of support.

Furthermore, through my participation with the National Citizen Service I can demonstrate a time where I was given a position of responsibility. This was through completing a community initiative, in which I was picked to be my team's Project Leader. Over the course of two weeks, my team and I were tasked with organising a fundraiser for a care home we were sponsoring. As Project Leader, I took charge of delegating tasks, co-ordinating the event and successfully securing 250 pounds, the highest possible amount of funding. I achieved this by delivering a compelling presentation to prospective investors, highlighting the extensive planning, effort and thought my team and I had dedicated to the fundraiser, as well as the significant impact it would have on the care home’s residents.

I believe I succeeded in securing this funding because I took the time to assess and utilise my team’s strengths. For instance, one member was an excellent baker, which allowed us to source an assortment of desserts and sweet treats at a great deal for the fundraiser. My ability to take responsibility, collaborate effectively and deliver meaningful results are key qualities for a committee representative.

If I am picked for the role of Solicitor Apprentice Representative, I envision creating a strong support network for apprentices by facilitating workshops, peer mentoring and professional development opportunities. I aim to be an approachable representative, someone apprentices can turn to for guidance and support. By fostering connections between apprentices and experienced professionals, I hope to empower each individual to make the most of their JLD membership and legal career journey.
