Choose your Leeds JLD Committee for 2024
Victoria Boothby

I am a Trainee solicitor in my first seat at Schofield Sweeney Solicitors. I am well suited for the role of Events Officer as I have vast experience in society committees’ whist at university. In the MARS (Mooting, Advocacy, and Research Skills) society I held positions as the Secretary and Treasurer. My experiences in these roles have given me the skills to work to society deadlines alongside other commitments and work as part of the wider society team. Working in different roles in the same society means that I understand how to collaborate with the team in order to produce results. As the Events Officer, understanding the Treasurer role will benefit me. As the Treasurer, I had regular meetings with the President and events teams to ensure we were on budget. The role is about being organised and setting clear budgets for your fellow committee members to follow. This knowledge will help me collaborate with the JLD Treasurer and President enabling the committee to reach our full potential.

I also held the position of Vice President of the Northumbria Ice Hockey Society. In this role I coordinated the whole team to attend various social events and fixtures. Our training sessions were at midnight on Sunday nights. As a result, members were not always keen in attending every session. To overcome this, I always brought sweets and music to make the environment in the rink a happy and motivating one. This skill will be useful as the Events Officer. Making sure all events, whether outwardly exciting or not, are organised so that all members have positive experiences.

My position as the Student Associate for Lexis Nexis will be of benefit in this role. I trained over 360 students over the course of the year on Lexis Nexis products. The role included running and promoting weekly training sessions and organising events to keep students engaged. To do this I created a 4-week training programme that was easy for students to follow, and I created a ‘goodie bag’ at the end of the training programme as an incentive. As an Event Officer, I will be doing similar tasks my keeping members engaged with interesting and engaging events. Therefore, I feel I can add value from my past experiences to the role.

I enjoy working as part of a team and meeting new people and feel I can add real value the JLD committee though my past experiences. I am an outgoing person and I like to push myself out of my comfort zone. In in my spare time, I like to go surfing at Saltburn and ice skate. I can bring new and different ideas to the role, and I am always interested in trying something new.
