I’m Ryan and I’m a paralegal in the Commercial Property team at Tyr. Alongside this, I’m the FELT Officer on the Leeds JLD Committee.
How does a regular day go for you?
Most days differ and will depend on what tasks the fee earners in my team set me. I have around 10 fee earners in my team, with the majority of them being partners and legal directors. These tasks vary from emailing other side’s solicitors to drafting applications and documents. I also run files where I take the matter from its inception to completion, which involves drafting transfers, contracts and leases.
What made you want to get involved with the LJLD Committee?
I moved to Leeds over 4 years ago and, even though I had a placement year during university and a great paralegal group at my work, I felt I wanted to integrate more within the legal community. I also knew that when I become a solicitor, I would be expected to network with fellow professionals and clients to obtain work.
I put myself forward for the role as I had been going to JLD events for a couple of years and I felt like it would be a great experience, which it has been!
What does your role require you to do?
I organise the events which relate to FELT and in-house professionals, which involves overseeing everything related to the event including booking the venue, meeting sponsors, liaising with event organisers and greeting people on the day of the event. I hadn’t been in charge of an event before, however once I had done the first event then I knew nothing major could go wrong! I take part in the monthly JLD meetings where we all discuss what we’re doing in our current roles, what’s coming up and provide any ideas or feedback to other areas of the JLD that are discussed.
