Hi, I’m Abbie, Sponsorship Officer for the Leeds Junior Lawyers Division (JLD). I’m a Trainee Solicitor at Mills & Reeve LLP and will be qualifying into the M&R Family team in September. As part of the Leeds JLD Committee, I help support junior lawyers across West Yorkshire by organising the funding and sponsorship of the events that bring us together — whether it be for networking, learning, or just having fun.
How does a regular day go for you?
(Like most people) My day usually starts with checking emails — both work and JLD-related. As Sponsorship Officer, I reach out to existing and potential new sponsors, so I’ll spend time drafting personalised messages, researching companies, and setting up meetings. I also stay in regular contact with the other JLD Officers to keep up to date with upcoming events and whether sponsorship is needed.
Balancing my JLD responsibilities alongside my day job can be a challenge, but it’s incredibly rewarding.
What made you want to get involved with the LJLD Committee?
I first came across Leeds JLD through their events, which were a great way to meet other junior lawyers and feel part of the wider legal community. I wanted to give something back and be more involved, so when the opportunity to join the committee came up, I went for it! The Sponsorship Officer role felt like a good fit — I enjoy building relationships and working behind the scenes to make things happen.
What does your role require you to do?
As Sponsorship Officer, my main responsibility is securing funding for our events. This involves:
Reaching out to potential sponsors (especially those who’ve supported us before) to arrange sponsorship for annual favourites like the Winter Ball, Easter and Summer Socials, as well as smaller events like FELT, sports, and educational sessions;
Personalising communications to build genuine relationships;
Organising meetings (coffee chats work best!) to discuss packages, the benefits of getting involved, and event plans;
Coordinating with our Events team to ensure sponsors’ requirements are met and that they’re aware of all event logistics;
Coordinating with our Treasurer to issue invoices; and
Managing exclusivity agreements with key sponsors like recruiters and mortgage advisers.
Being part of Leeds JLD has been a fantastic experience. It’s helped me grow professionally, build industry connections, and contribute to something meaningful. If you're thinking about getting involved — do it!
